About Mylai

The Antiquity: Mylapore (derived from Mayil-aarppum, meaning "the ecstatic cry of the peacock") stands proud as one of India's oldest continuously inhabited neighborhoods. Dating back well over 2,000 years, its foundational heritage deeply predates the modern metropolitan landscape of Chennai by entire millennia.

The Global Port: In ancient classical eras, this sacred precinct served as a thriving international seaport kingdom. Recorded by Ptolemy as Maliarpha and celebrated by early global maritime traders, it was highly sought after for its exceptional handwoven textiles, fine spices, and maritime trade.

The Cultural Heart: Today, Mylapore remains the undisputed beating heart of classical south Indian civilization. It serves as an active living nursery preserving the highest standards of Carnatic music, traditional architecture, Vedic scholarship, and classical Bharatanatyam dance.

Mylai References by Great Saints

Saint Thirugnana Sambandar & The Poompavai Miracle

Mylapore is the site of one of Saivism's greatest miracles. When a young maiden named Poompavai tragically passed away, her grieving father preserved her structural ashes in a clay urn. Driven by divine grace, Saint Thirugnana Sambandar stood before the Kapaleeshwarar shrine and sang the legendary Poompavai Padikam.

Upon singing these sacred Tamil verses, the power of devotion broke through reality: the clay urn burst open, and Poompavai stepped back into life, completely restored.
Saint Thiruvalluvar & The Kural Legacy

Mylapore is traditionally honored as the sacred home of the immortal weaver-saint and philosopher, Saint Thiruvalluvar. It was here in this cultural ecosystem that he lived and compiled the timeless Thirukkural—one of the world's premier ethical texts consisting of 1,330 couplets governing human conduct, righteousness, and virtue.

Saint Arunagirinathar & Peyazhwar

The sacred landscape of Mylai is further sung by Saint Arunagirinathar, who composed high-meter rhythmic Thiruppugazh melodies dedicated to Lord Murugan enshrined inside the Kapaleeshwarar compound. Simultaneously, the Vaishnavite saint Peyazhwar discovered his miraculous birth inside a lily flower within the Adikesava Perumal tank, embedding his divine poetry into the core of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham.
